Kelly Stevenson

I use the figure to create a visible explanation of complex human emotions. A successful sculpture communicates to the visceral, intelligent body of my viewer; creating a visual story that invites introspection through relatable emotional cues. I strive to use sculpture as an entry point; where what is uniquely felt inside the individual can be universally shared. As complex beings, our bodies have a unique language that is in constant dialogue with the outside world. Through sculpting the human form, my goal is to visually reveal how we expose and conceal our feelings in the physical body. My hope is that each piece I create triggers a narrative that can bridge our individual and universal human experiences. I often intend for the content of each sculpture to remain ambiguous enough that my work can serve as a portrait for anyone.

I am a multifaceted, ceramic and mixed-media artist. Throughout my career, I have investigated and created bodies of works that largely expand the compass of “ceramic, fine art and craft”. In addition to sculpting the human figure, I make pottery that serves as a canvases for abstract and representational imagery. I have created bodies of ceramic-based, mixed media works: both functional and abstract. Through the creation of multiple bodies of work, I’ve developed a deep and wide-ranging understanding of ceramics as an art form.
